A DOCUMENTARY JUST PREIMERED THAT IS SO ABSURD EVEN THE DIRECTOR HAD NO IDEA WHAT WAS GOING ON

Sunday night in Telluride, there was a quiet screening for a new documentary: "You Can See Everything," about Elizabeth Holmes co-directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim. The audience was not told about the subject or content of the film until they were in their seats. When they were, phones went into locked pouches, a security team worked the aisles in night-vision goggles, and a programmer took the stage to warn the crowd that anyone who spoiled it was no longer loved. The setup is that Holmes and her partner Billy Evans went to A24 wanting their story documented, and the studio handed the job to the guy from "Nathan for You." Fielder ended up at a San Diego rental house with Holmes, Evans and their two kids during the 34 days before she reported to federal prison in May 2023 to start an 11-year, 3-month sentence for defrauding investors with her health tech firm. He kept going for three years, driven by what he called absolute shock and confusion. The finished film runs 174 minutes. At the post-screening Q&A, Fielder said he is still struggling to understand what he experienced, and that he's hoping audiences can explain it to him. Sections where he communicates with Holmes off camera, including at her prison in Texas, are re-created using an A-list actress whose identity is a plot point he asked the room not to leak. In the teaser, Holmes looks into the lens and says she's not that person, she promises. Nobody in that theater bought it, and that appears to be the whole movie.

Why you should give a shit: The woman who sold Silicon Valley on "just trust me" volunteered for three years of surveillance by the one comedian in America whose entire career is proving that nobody should trust anybody, and it's in theaters in October.
