KID CUDI GOT SICK OF WAITING FOR A BASQUIAT MOVIE AND CAST HIMSELF IN ONE HE WROTE
People have been telling Kid Cudi to play Jean-Michel Basquiat for years. No studio ever actually did anything about it, so on Wednesday he announced Jean, a Basquiat film he wrote, will direct, and will star in. His stated reason, roughly, was that he finally said fuck it and wrote it himself. That is the whole origin story. Hollywood left the part sitting there and he walked off with it. He posted wardrobe tests to Instagram, suit and tie and a dreadlocked wig, then got ahead of the comment section by noting the hair is a rough version and promising they'll get it right. The prep sounds legitimate: books, and conversations with people who actually knew Basquiat, which is more homework than plenty of biopics do with a studio behind them. Two complications. Cudi is 42 and Basquiat died in 1988 at 27, so the wig has a lot of work ahead of it. And the Basquiat lane is stacked. Jeffrey Wright played him in 1996, Kelvin Harrison Jr. has Samo Lives, Jeremy Pope has The Collaboration with no release date, and an estate-approved documentary is headed to Netflix in December. Jean doesn't start shooting until 2027, by which point everyone will have met this guy four times.
Why you should give a shit: Nobody in Hollywood would cast him, so he cast himself, and 2027 will decide whether that's real creative control or just the one audition on earth you can't lose.
