COMMANDERS TIE THE GIANTS WITHOUT EVER ATTEMPTING THE 42-YARD KICK THAT WOULD HAVE WON IT
Washington had the ball at the Giants 24 with 12 seconds left in overtime, no timeouts, and a 42-yard field goal sitting there for the win. Jayden Daniels dropped back on second-and-8, found nobody, tucked it and went down for no gain with about eight seconds showing. The Commanders scrambled up to the line to spike it. The clock got there first. Dan Quinn ripped off his headset. The ugly part is Washington never needed another yard, because the next score ended the game, so Drew Stevens could have kicked it on second down and everybody goes home happy. Daniels was otherwise excellent in his first game back from dislocating his left elbow for the second time this season, running for 103 yards and two touchdowns with a brace on the arm. He also helped build a 27-13 fourth-quarter lead that the defense handed right back, with Jameis Winston throwing for 326 yards and three scores and Malik Nabers tying it with 1:43 to play. Nobody earned this one. Giants kicker Dominic Zvada went 2 for 5. Quinn said the tie feels like a loss and called it his responsibility and no one else's. Daniels said ultimately it's on him. Terry McLaurin went with "unacceptable." Part-owner Magic Johnson posted that he was in total disbelief.
Why you should give a shit: Washington threw away a win chasing four extra yards it didn't need, and at 1-3-1 behind the 3-1-1 Giants, that half-game is the exact kind of thing a coach gets asked about in a January press conference he didn't want to hold.
