MAN CITY GO 1 FOR 115 IN FRONT OF AN INDEPENDENT PANEL

An independent panel has found Manchester City guilty on 114 of the 115 Premier League charges covering financial breaches between 2009 and 2018, first reported by David Ornstein at The Athletic. City beat one charge. Frame it and hang it at the Etihad. The timeline is its own punchline. The Premier League filed the charges in February 2023 after a four-year investigation, the hearing ran from September to December 2024, and the verdict landed on the last Friday of September 2026. And officially, none of it exists. The league called the case a private and confidential process and refused to comment. City did not deny the verdict, said the process is ongoing with significant elements to be completed, and pointed back at its 2023 line about a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence. ESPN reported a source claiming City sought an injunction that Friday to block the story. City strongly denied it. No sanction has been set. The commission can go with a fine, a points deduction, or in extreme cases expulsion, and there is no formula that turns 114 guilty findings into a number of points. For scale, Everton got 10 points, reduced to six on appeal. Nottingham Forest got four. City are expected to appeal, so the trial of the century now gets a sequel.

TRUMP REJECTS IRAN'S SEVEN-DAY DEAL, PENCILS THEM IN FOR MONDAY

Iran's foreign minister went to the UN General Assembly with a package deal. Lift the naval blockade, drop the sanctions on Iranian oil, unfreeze the money, hold a regional ceasefire, and within seven days Hormuz reopens and nuclear talks restart. Trump's response, delivered to reporters on the White House lawn before boarding Marine One, was that he rejected their deal. He told Axios the terms were something he might have signed a year ago and that Tehran "overplayed their hand." Then he said he expects talks with Iran again this week, possibly Monday, run through Qatari mediators. Killing the deal and booking the next session inside the same weekend is a choice. The spin is where it falls apart. Trump says the US has total control of the strait and bragged that 29 ships came through in one night and more than 20 million barrels over the weekend. The strait is still functionally blockaded by Iran, which is the whole reason anyone is at the table. Araghchi says he heard about the rejection from Trump and not from the mediators, and pointed out the president says a lot of contradictory things. Asked whether airstrikes could restart, Trump said he's always thinking about it. The Wall Street Journal reports he's weighing a resumed bombing campaign after the November 3 midterms, which puts the war neatly on the election calendar.

BARN OWL STOWAWAY ON A BRITISH ARMY RACING YACHT

On August 19, seventy nautical miles off Great Yarmouth, the British Army's offshore racing yacht Fujitsu British Soldier picked up a crew member nobody vetted. A wild barn owl came in hot, whiffed a landing on a sailor's head, and then tumbled off the mast into the North Sea. Three times. She kept clawing her way back to the boat, which is either heroism or the worst flying ever recorded by a creature with wings. Barn owls do not migrate and have no waterproofing on their feathers, per Dan Goldsmith of Great Yarmouth's Marine and Wildlife Rescue, so a soaked owl over open water is a rock with a face. She eventually collapsed onto the deck, where the soldiers wrapped her in a towel, fed her and built her a bed for the night. The crew christened her Little Reg, then took a closer look, then upgraded it to Little Regina. Skipper Will Naylor told race officials he had an extra crew member and joked that "Someone is going to have to walk the plank." The Barn Owl Trust, Marine and Wildlife Rescue and Caister Independent Lifeboat handled the handoff while the boat carried on with its 1,805-nautical-mile lap of Britain and Ireland. Little Regina was dehydrated and underweight and expected to recover fully. The Army finished 18th on IRC in 12 days, 21 hours, 12 minutes and 33 seconds, owl not included.

REPORTER BET LIKE AN ADDICT FOR 10 STRAIGHT WEEKS AND DRAFTKINGS PROMOTED HIM

ProPublica's Jake Pearson opened a DraftKings account under his own name, linked his debit card, and told the app he was a reporter. Then he spent 10 weeks betting like a man in freefall, on purpose, with a panel of addiction specialists, recovering gamblers and pro bettors coaching him on exactly what the red flags look like. He hit every one of them. He blew about $1,800 in one night chasing his losses during the Knicks run. The next day DraftKings emailed him an invitation to the VIP Showcase, a three-week audition for the velvet rope. He ripped 64 wagers on French Open tennis in a single two-hour sitting from his office chair, including $75 on who would win one specific tiebreak point. He played 500 rounds of blackjack in a weekend, roughly half his total bets for the entire experiment. Final tab, around $10,000 of ProPublica's money. The responsible gaming prompts he did trigger were a tap away from gone while the promos kept buzzing. DraftKings says it proactively closes accounts when someone shows too many signs of trouble. An executive declined to say how many times that has actually happened. FanDuel got the same behavior for a week and at least had the decency not to send a fruit basket.

THE TRUMP-XI SUMMIT PRODUCED TWO PANDAS AND NOT MUCH ELSE

Ping Ping and Fu Shuang touched down at Hartsfield-Jackson on Sunday morning aboard a dedicated FedEx "Panda Express" Boeing 777. Both bears were born in 2020 at the Chengdu Research Base, both are staying 10 years, and both got a better flight than anyone reading this. The loan is the marquee result of last week's three-day Washington summit. Xi announced the arrival timeline Thursday at the White House, and outlets covering the talks noted no fixes on trade, AI, Taiwan or the war with Iran. Al Jazeera called it no major policy breakthroughs. The White House came out of the same room promoting an agreed dialogue on superintelligence, which is two governments scheduling a future meeting about a thing neither one controls. The panda paperwork was finished back in April. Xi just sat on the date until he had a podium and a camera. Zoo CEO Raymond B. King called it "a thrilling day for Zoo Atlanta," then the zoo clarified that nobody gets to see them. The pandas go into about a month of quarantine in a biosecure section of the new panda complex, with no public debut date announced. Atlanta is now one of three US zoos with pandas, after the previous 25-year run ended in 2024 and the bears all went home.
