97-YEAR-OLD BRITISH GRANDMOTHER OUTWORKED YOU

97-YEAR-OLD BRITISH GRANDMOTHER OUTWORKED YOU

Betty Bromage, born 12 March 1929, got on top of a biplane at an airfield in Cirencester on 4th of August and let a pilot fly her through a loop-the-loop. Guinness logged her at 97 years and 145 days, which beats the oldest female wing walker record she set herself in 2022, and it earned her a second title for the oldest woman to do the loop. She broke her own record. The only person she had to beat was Betty. This was her sixth wing walk since she was 87. She had a stroke in August 2025 that still affects her speech, and the flight raised money for the stroke unit at Cheltenham General Hospital, where she was treated. Her stated reasoning to the BBC was that she would get bored of life otherwise, that she can't drive and can't see very well, so she does the things she can do. The things she can do include going inside out at a few thousand feet. On the loop itself she said you just have to have faith in your pilot. Somewhere in an office, a Guinness adjudicator is maintaining a spreadsheet for how old a human can be while bolted to the outside of an aircraft, and the top of the leaderboard keeps being one British nurse in her nineties.

Why you should give a shit: A 97-year-old post stroke raised money for the ward that patched her up by going upside down over Gloucestershire, so whatever reason you've got for skipping the gym today, say it out loud and hear how it sounds.
