JOHN DEERE BUILT AN AI FOR FARMERS AND NAMED IT JD, WHICH TOOK SOME DOING

John Deere rolled into the Farm Progress Show in Boone, Iowa this week with its big generative AI announcement: an assistant built into Operations Center called JD. The company is named John Deere. The chatbot is named JD. Somewhere a branding team got paid for that. The product is real, though. JD reads a farmer's own field, machine and operational data and answers questions in plain language, so you can ask how fuel use during tillage compared with the last three years, which sprayer operator covered the most acres per hour, or when the historical trends say to start harvest. Deere's chief technology officer, Jahmy Hindman, says it turns navigating a sea of data into just asking a question. A product marketing manager said farmers want a trusted data scientist dedicated to their operation, which is a polite way of saying nobody has time to open forty dashboards in the middle of harvest. It's free, it works only on your own farm's history, and Deere paired the launch with a Farmer Data Commitment: ten principles, including that it does not sell your farm data. Comforting, from the company that spent years telling farmers their tractor was too sophisticated to fix in their own shed. Early access is limited to select U.S. customers, with wider rollout later this year, in-cab displays after that, then turf, construction, roadbuilding and forestry.
