TITANS PRACTICE ARGUMENT TURNS INTO A GUY FOR GOING TO HIS CAR FOR A GUN
Tuesday the Titans put out a statement saying they had reviewed an "incident" at the team facility and released defensive tackle Jordan Elliott. That was the entire message. No details, no questions. Reporting filled in the blanks. On Thursday, Oct. 15, Elliott and right tackle JC Latham tangled during a play at practice, Elliott was told to leave the field, took his pads off on the sideline and walked out to his car in the players' parking area with security cameras capturing the whole sequence, and veteran defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers talked him down. The gun never left Elliott's parking spot. Metro Nashville police said no reports had been filed. Then head coach Robert Saleh got in front of a microphone and said Elliott is a father and a great husband who "never committed a crime in his entire life, and he pulled a gun in the parking lot." That is a character reference with a trapdoor in it. Saleh called it "a terrible lapse in judgment that I recognize as a call for help more than a criminal act." He said Elliott was referred to a clinician. He also brought up two NFL players lost to suicide in the past year and the guys who struggle without getting help. He closed by working the phones in public. His message to the other 31 teams: if you need a run stopping DT for a playoff run, call me, and I'll tell you everything you need to know about him. Cut Tuesday, represented by his old head coach Wednesday. The NFL says the situation is under review.
Why you should give a shit: Every camera in that building caught the walk and not one of them stopped it, so the league's entire safety net that Thursday was one teammate who decided to follow him outside.
