MANHATTAN SEWER CRAWLERS STRIKE AGAIN
Three men were seen climbing into a manhole on West 141st Street in Hamilton Heights at 12:52 a.m. Sunday. Officers showed up. The men were gone. FDNY and NYPD investigators worked the scene overnight looking for anything that would point them toward the crew, and came back up with nothing. Police say it's the first time this has happened in that neighborhood, which is the only confident sentence anyone has produced about this story. It came two days after the Upper East Side, where four men and a woman popped out of a manhole on East 82nd Street near East End Avenue just after 2 a.m. and drove off in a black SUV. They left behind two shovels and two other tools. The Emergency Service Unit fished the shovels out with a magnet. The working theory from the NYPD and the Department of Environmental Protection is treasure hunting. Storms wash valuables and scrap metal into the storm drains, and people go down after them. That's exactly what two Queens men told detectives in September after they surfaced on Park Avenue near East 61st Street during the UN General Assembly, across from the hotel Netanyahu usually uses. Cops say it wasn't political, it was scrap. Both were charged with trespassing. DEP keeps pointing out that the sewers are illegal to enter and stocked with noxious gas, flooding and confined spaces. Sightings have piled up across the boroughs and out on Long Island since at least May. Nobody has stopped going down.
DP WORLD TOUR TO LIV GOLFERS: PICK A TOUR OR KISS THE RYDER CUP GOODBYE
The DP World Tour spent four years playing nice with the breakaway league. On Monday it stopped. CEO Guy Kinnings told BBC Sport that golfers who sign up for LIV 2.0 won't get conditional status or membership for the 2027 season, and the quote was "players need to make a choice." Translation: no membership, no Ryder Cup. Only DP World Tour members can play for Europe, and the next one runs Sept. 17-19 at Adare Manor in Ireland. Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton were the only two LIV guys on the European side at Bethpage Black in 2025. Hatton now has a decision to make. Rahm already made his, through a lawyer, at a bankruptcy hearing. Yes, bankruptcy hearing. LIV filed Chapter 11 on Sept. 8, listing $100 million to $500 million in assets against $500 million to $1 billion in liabilities, which happened after the Saudi PIF, roughly $5 billion deep since 2021, announced it was cutting off the money after the 2026 season. The relaunch pitch is a $300 million investment with players owning 52.5% of the new company. Players have until Oct. 25 to commit. So far the publicly committed roster is Richard Bland and Cameron Tringale. So the offer is majority equity in an operation whose own filings say it owes more than it owns, and the entry fee is Europe.
RJ MITTE, WALTER WHITE JR. ON 'BREAKING BAD,' DEAD AT 34
RJ Mitte died Monday in Brownsville, Texas. He was 34. His representatives confirmed the death and called him a beloved actor, philanthropist and passionate disability rights advocate, and asked for the family's privacy. Deadline reported that his reps said the cause was suicide. Other outlets, including The Hollywood Reporter, attributed the suicide report to TMZ citing a county official. Per the AP, Cameron County Justice of the Peace Cyndi Hinojosa pronounced him dead around 1:30 p.m. local time at what she believed was his home, and said an autopsy will be performed. Mitte was born August 21, 1992 in Jackson, Mississippi, and was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at three. He moved to Hollywood at 14 and landed Walter White Jr., a role written for a character who also had CP. He stayed with Breaking Bad for all five seasons, from 2008 to 2013. He spent the years after the show doing the work. Ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and for Shriners Children's. President of The Mitte Foundation, which backed the arts in Brownsville and helped the Mitte Cultural District earn its Texas Cultural District designation. He got engaged to Kennedy Suarez in 2025 at a United Cerebral Palsy fundraiser in San Diego, where he was a featured speaker. Bryan Cranston, his TV father, posted a tribute saying he loved him and would miss him. If you're struggling, call or text 988 in the US.
MAN WHO SAID HE WAS DONE WITH POLITICS SPENDS $276 MILLION ON POLITICS
Elon Musk has moved more than $276 million into Republican groups since the start of July, making him the biggest known donor of the 2026 midterms. His own representatives handed the numbers to the New York Times before Thursday's filing deadline, which is one way to be quiet about it. The breakdown is where it gets stupid. $158 million went to the Senate Leadership Fund, the most that group has ever taken from one donor in a quarter, and more than its Democratic counterpart raised from every donor it has that quarter. Another $76 million went to his own America PAC. Then $20 million to the House Republicans' super PAC, $10 million to a PAC boosting Texas AG Ken Paxton, $10 million to the Republican Governors Association, and $2 million to the Republican attorneys general, which at that point is tip money. Musk's PAC spokesman says a Democratic sweep means a socialist, woke, borderless America. Democrats say he is simply trying to buy the elections outright. Both sides are describing the same wire transfer. Total for the 2025-26 cycle: roughly $366 million, more than the $290 million he spent in 2024, and all of it after he announced last May that he'd done enough.

SCIENTISTS NAME THE ONLY TWO THINGS THAT CAN END HUMANITY
Thirty-five experts, three years of work, hundreds of candidate catastrophes, 204 countries modeled, and the whole thing dropped in The Lancet this week at the World Health Summit in Berlin. Seventeen threats made the cut. Only two can finish the species: nuclear conflict and the famine that follows it, and the malicious use of AI, specifically the part where a model helps some dipshit cook up a bioweapon. The Lancet's companion editorial says that if either one lands, humanity gets an apocalypse. That is a hell of a word to find in a medical journal. To even qualify as catastrophic, a threat had to be capable of costing a billion DALYs by 2100. One DALY is one year of healthy life lost to illness, disability, or dying early. Preventing nuclear war could avert 133 million deaths and 9.35 billion of those years. Reducing the malicious AI risk could save an estimated 10.4 billion. And then there is obesity at 23.1 billion, more than double the AI figure, and the leading threat in 154 of the 204 countries studied. Income inequality comes in at 13.8 billion, which the commission puts at roughly 25 COVID pandemics worth of damage. Co-chair Christopher Murray said the team expected to find three big problems, conflict, climate, and pandemics, and walked away with a much longer list. The commission insists this is not a priority ranking, partly because DALYs cannot count the billions who would never be born after an extinction event. Sleep tight.
