TRUMP SAYS THE US HAD THE FAIRFORD SUSPECTS 'UNDER VIEW FOR A LONG TIME.' A FARMER FOUND THEM AT 12:45 A.M.
At about 12:45 a.m. Sunday, police got a call about three suspicious vehicles heading toward RAF Fairford. The caller was a local farmer who told the BBC she came across masked men with three large vans, and said officers turned up roughly 15 minutes later. What she set off: armed police, five arrests near the village of Whelford, a 400-metre cordon, Army explosives experts sending a robot to inspect three white vans, and around 85 households evacuated. Whelford sits less than half a mile from the base, which American B-1s and B-52s have flown from since March, when Keir Starmer finally signed off on US strikes against Iranian missile sites. Then Trump spoke. He told reporters the men "were looking to do big damage to our fort" and that "we had them under view for a long time, and we got them." Two problems. Fairford is a British base. And BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner said there was a "clear inconsistency" in that story, with Whitehall sources telling him this was not an intelligence-led operation. By Monday afternoon the whole thing had deflated. The five, British nationals from London aged 23 to 25, were released on bail after "extensive interviews and enquiries." No charges. Counter terror chief Laurence Taylor said the investigation is not over and they are weighing every angle, including foreign-state proxies acting "knowingly or unknowingly," plus Russia, non-state groups, and the fact that Fairford has been an anti-war protest target for decades. Iran's embassy in London called the links to it unfounded and malicious.
Why you should give a shit: Nobody has been charged and nobody has named a motive, so the only confirmed layer of defense around a US bomber staging base this week was one farmer with a phone and a terrible sleep schedule.
