THE GUY WHO SAID HE KILLED TUPAC GETS CONVICTED OF KILLING TUPAC
A Las Vegas jury needed less than three hours on Monday to convict Duane "Keffe D" Davis, 63, of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon in the 1996 drive-by shooting of Tupac Shakur. The trial ran nearly two weeks. Two dozen prosecution witnesses, three for the defense, Davis did not take the stand. Prosecutors never claimed he fired the gun. Under Nevada law, helping someone commit a murder gets you convicted of the murder, and Chief Deputy DA Binu Palal told jurors Davis and his crew "went hunting" for Shakur and Suge Knight. The star witness was basically Davis's own mouth. Police interviews, media appearances, and a 2019 memoir called Compton Street Legend that walked through the shooting in detail and helped revive a case nobody had charged anyone in for over two decades. His attorney's defense was that all of it was fiction and his client is "full of crap" which is a hell of a thing to argue about the man paying you millions to keep him out of jail. Judge Carli Kierny ordered Davis held without bond until his October 13 sentencing, where he faces life without parole. Davis told the court he plans to appeal, and that he wants his stuff back.
Why you should give a shit: Thirty years, one conviction, and the thing that finally cracked it was the defendant publishing the story himself, so if you take one lesson from this case, it's that the book deal is not worth it.
